AN: inspired by the Alfred Noyes' Poem "The Highwayman" - OCs very much welcome. The plunnie's been gnawing at my ankle and I'm afraid it got stalled so I figure writing it as an interfic may help revive the plunnie
Sachiko settled down on a stool, well, more along the lines of perched on the stool. Her dark leather ankle boots peaked out from underneath a cream colored dress. Her dark hair was pinned and plaited up into a tightly braided bun. She had settled down at her father's counter and picked up a small mug of ale. She sipped it slowly, watching to see if her half-brother (well, half-brother in the sense that her father had taken him in and raised him, treating him much like a biological son even if there was no biological claim between them) and his new bride had arrived yet.
She hid a grimace behind the mug as she thought of that highwayman that was the current topic of conversation. Highwayman, indeed. More like a fool with a large death wish. Honestly, couldn't the male have taken a decent job that wouldn't end with someone being killed. "That man's a fool," she said aloud, capturing the tavern's attention. "He couldn't handle working a decent job so he makes a living stealing from honest folk and you all seem to worship him. 'Tis a foolish thing." She ended her rant with a delicate snort.
Honestly, she couldn't see what the big deal about that highwayman was. A nobleman (not to mention the youngest heir of the noble Uchiha family) of all things who had given up his position to cause trouble. Seemed like an idiot to her - but then she recalled she had oft thought of him as they grew together. She shook her head and glanced up to see her half-brother and his young bride, the heiress to the noble Hyuuga family, approaching where she was sitting.
"Greetings, Naruto," she said softly, rising to hug him and his bride. "Welcome home. Are you staying the night?" she asked politely. "And you best say yes. Papa's got your room already for you and your young bride." She was about to say more when a hush settled on the room. She looked confused for a moment before she saw the source of the silence. She gritted her teeth - it was the man everyone had been talking about. The highwayman. She drew away from her half-brother and made her way over to the door. "And what is that you want, m'lord?" she asked, fairly spitting the word out.
She could see him eying her and she gritted her teeth before reaching up to slap him. She didn't like being treated like a choice piece of meat by this man. "I'm not on the menu, m'lord," she snapped.
