Rules for Starting and/or Writing Interfics

Interactive Fanfics, or interfics, are ‘choose your own ending’ (or ‘choose your own continuation’ if you prefer) stories started by one author and continued by any number of others who wish to participate. At the end of each segment, readers are given the opportunity to either wait for the next instalment or write their own contribution. The direction of the story can change depending on who writes it and other authors must react to the creativity of their fellow ficcers. Interfics are a fun way to share your ideas if you find it difficult to write an entire fic on your own, and unlike RPGs anyone can join in at any time and nobody is confined to writing from only one character’s point of view.

Creativity is paramount here, but there do have to be a couple of rules to make sure everyone has fun without things getting messy or confusing.

1) Give your new thread a (working) title and one-sentence description of what the interfic is about. This way potential contributors know which interfics would interest them and the board doesn’t get inundated by several dozen fics telling the same story. Neither title nor description have to be especially witty and you don’t have to stick to that title if the fic is ever completed and you post the finished product somewhere like Fanfiction.net or LiveJournal. Perfectly acceptable are things like ‘Yuugi’s Birthday (the gang organise a party for Yuugi)’, ‘Waiting For Eternity (AE fic set before Atem is crowned)’, or ‘Epic Journey Through the Magic Kingdom (Fantasy AU involving elves, trolls, dragons and gruel. And blisters. Lots and lots of blisters)’.

2) The originator of the fic has ownership of it if it is completed and does not have to ask permission of the contributors before reposting it. This means they can post it wherever they want, but passing it off as all their own work is a no-no. They must give credit to all contributors by name, as is polite. On the flip side, the whole idea of interfic is that other people’s ideas are just as valid as everyone else’s, so the originator relinquishes the right to complain if the fic ‘doesn’t go the way they want’.

3) Please don’t post the next bit of fic if you wrote the last part. That kind of defeats the idea of an interfic. Encouraging others to add something so you can write the part after that is fine, though.

4) If you want to add to the fic, don’t just write one line or a single piece of dialogue. A few paragraphs is fine, as is a few pages if you feel inspired enough, but give readers something to get their teeth into.

5) No ‘rocks fall and everybody dies’ posts. By all means, write something shocking or tragic if you think the fic calls for it, and it makes sense in the context of the plot that has evolved, but leave the shock value for exploitation horror movies.

6) Absolutely NO character bashing of any sort. Doing so is likely to get you banned from the whole board if it’s especially nasty or childish. This is a place for being creative and having fun, not sniping at each other or destroying what other contributors have created.

7) If you liked what someone else wrote or a contribution made your heart leap into your throat, but you don’t want to write any of the fic yourself, commenting with compliments or words of encouragement is perfectly fine too. Interfics aren’t just about the fanfic; they’re about fandom interaction of ALL types.

8) There are no age restrictions, so adult-themed fic is allowed if that’s your bag. However, if you are going to start something you know will be racy, mark the fic as such (see Rule #1) or put a warning at the start of your post if you are writing a spicy instalment after the fic has already started.

9) Do I even need to say ‘no plagiarising existing fics’?
