"You're certain you don't want to work with them?" Amelda said as they continued to slink away unseen.
"Would you work with Kaiba, even though you know he and his family weren't to blame for what happened to you and your brother?"
Amelda unconsciously clenched his fist, realized he'd done so. "I get your point. Still, we share a common enemy, we're going to meet up again."
"And when that time comes, we can deal with that enemy and move on without further delay."
"Right." If Raphael's changes had gone deeper than the physical, they certainly didn't show.
....
"So Kaiba, you finished expediting things yet?" Jounouchi groused as Kaiba entered their holding cell where they'd been questioned for hours on end. "Or do I have to kiss your pretty pale patootie to get your rear in gear?"
Seto narrowed his eyes quizzically at Jounouchi. "I can't believe I miss your swearing."
"Huh?"
"Nothing." Seto rubbed his temples. "The gears are finally turning, no thanks to this body of mine."

Otogi gave him his beast beady-eyed stare – made less effective by smeary make-up and a refusal by the police to let him see himself in a mirror to fix it. You’d think they were all common criminals or something.
“You’ve already given witness statements,” Seto went on. “I think they’re going to release you soon, although you’ll all be expected to stay within the city limits while the case is being investigated. You’ve none of you been arrested, but you’re still considered ‘persons of interest’. Which is the only way you’ll ever be termed ‘interesting’, mutt.”
“Hey!” Jounouchi protested.
They had agreed to sell the idea that an attempt had indeed been made to kidnap Yuugi, or Yui, cousin of the famous Yuugi Mutou who was out of town on vacation in Egypt at the moment. Yui was always getting mistaken for her cousin, which had resulted in the botched kidnapping tonight. No, they didn’t know who the kidnappers were or their agenda and Seto had discreetly signalled his own team to provide paperwork for their temporary identities. Nobody beat Kaiba Corp when it came to disseminating information, whether genuine or false. Thus, the Domino Police Force had in their possession Yui Mutou, Keiko Jounouchi, Ran Otogi, Hitomi Honda and Anzu Mazaki, who had agreed to show them all around town while her friends were in Egypt. It really was amazing what several billion yen and stone cold cunning would get you in life.

"Well, that was my most uncomfortable trip to the police yet." 'Keiko' said with a pointed stretch of his arms as they exited the police station. "Seriously though, Keiko?" Jounouchi turned on 'Chiyoko'. "You couldn't get me a better fake name than that?"
"Do you really intend to make an argument out of something like this?" Seto tried to walk past Jounouchi, but was blocked at the chest by Jounouchi's arm.
"Considering you took what I should have gotten..."
"Oh for the love of..." Anzu said, having now recovered with only a few bandages to show her wear and tear from the accident. "Enough!" She grabbed both Jounouchi and Seto by the ear and pulled.
"What are you..." Both faltered as they realized they'd said the same thing at the same time.
"You both get off on pushing each other's buttons, and we don't have time for that, remember?"
She got a brief nod from them, and so released them.
"I will never not be amazed by her." 'Yui' muttered to herself.

The Kaiba mansion was a wreck. Anzu looked around in dismay at the damage. Expensive vases and wall hangings had been pulled over, almost as if someone had flung them at pursuers in a vain attempt to slow them down. The path of destruction led to a closet where a cell phone sat abandoned on the floor.
“Is that …?” she started.
“Mokuba’s, yes.” Seto said tightly. “This way.”
He led them to a downstairs study where the décor was all dark wood panelling and darker green drapes. It screamed old man, which made Anzu wonder whether it had once belonged to Gozaburo Kaiba. Inside a woman in a catsuit was tied to a chair while another in a maid’s outfit stood guard, a large rolling pin in her hands. Her eyes lit up when she saw them.
“Miss Chiyoko! You’re back! I watched over her, just as you said.”
“Good work, Chie,” Seto replied without enthusiasm. “We’ll take it from here.”
“Take … what, ma’am?” The maid looked between them and the trussed up woman. “You’re not going to hurt her, are you?”
“Her people stole Mokuba.” Seto’s words snapped off like icicles, each one driving into Anzu’s heart. “And her boss told me they will kill him if I bring the police into things. We just came from the police station.”
The maid’s eyes grew wide. “Master Mokuba …”
“Quite.” Seto strode over and relieved her of the rolling pin. “Leave, Chie. Now.”

"Listen carefully." Seto said the moment Chie was out of the room. "Your allies have failed to abduct any of my...associates, and more of our allies will be arriving before long. Tell me where you are keeping Mokuba, and I will refrain from bringing down the full power of the hammer of the Kaiba Corporation upon you."
The woman met Seto's gaze; though frightened, she remained silent.
Anzu let out an exasperated sigh. "Honestly Seto, I'd figure that you of all of us would know better."
"What do you mean?"
"Intimidation doesn't work, not in this sort of situation; you need to be able to convince her that you and she are on the same side."
"She was party to Mokuba's abduction." Seto's eyebrows raised in measured fury.
"All right, maybe you can't do that, but I can give it a shot." Anzu gently nudged Seto out of the way.
'All right Anzu', she thought to herself, 'you talked a big talk, now let's see if you can walk it.'

Mokuba raised his head. The world came slowly back into focus, which was actually less helpful than one might think. Everywhere was dark and there was a musty smell, like the thick dust that had coated everything the last time he went into the Kaiba Mansion’s copious attic. His mouth tasted like he imaged a cat’s litter tray might and his nose still stung from the chloroform.
“Ugh, where are we?” Directly behind him, Dinosaur Ryuzaki’s voice was bleary, as if he, too, was only just waking up.
“I don’t know.” Mokuba tried lifting his arms but couldn’t. They were locked to his sides and his torso had been looped with thick rope from collarbone to groin. If he breathed in and inflated his chest too much it pinched the skin and compressed his lungs. It also made Ryuzaki protest.
“Hey, ow! Quit that!”
“We’re tied together.” That would explain the warm flatness of another back against his. They were sitting on the floor, incapacitated inasmuch as it would take them too long to get to their feet tied together and anyone could put them out of action again before they even got to their knees.
“Well this sucks,” Ryuzaki said, competing for the Understatement of the Year Award.
“Uh-huh.”
“It’s not so bad for you; you’re used to being kidnapped. This is a whole new experience for me. A sucky one. This royally, royally SUCKS.”
“It doesn’t get any better with experience,” Mokuba replied, a trifle testily.
Their conversation was cut off as a door in the far wall opened, silhouetting a distinctly female form.

Mokuba watched silently as the woman walked up to him, her face covered in a golden mask. She reached down with a hand the same tone as the Ishtars and grabbed his hair, pulling him and Ryuzaki up; she was definitely stronger than she looked. Mokuba then saw her pull out a blade with the other hand, and he flinched. Then he felt hair getting chopped off, and he fell to the ground in pile with Ryuzaki. The figure seemed to appraise his lock of hair, then left, closing the door behind her.
"Is...that a normal part of kidnapping?"
"No." Still, Mokuba was certain there could be only one purpose to taking some of his hair. He just hoped his brother would be able to keep calm when it got to him.

“Hey, Mokuba? Don’t take this the wrong way but … is it normal to feel this scared? I mean, those women weren’t messing around, y’know?”
Mokuba tried to radiate the strength of experience. Who knew: maybe being kidnapped so often would actually come in handy for once? “Yeah, it’s normal.”
“Oh.” Ryuzaki fell silent for a minute. “Good,” he eventually said. “Are you?”
“Terrified.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“You ain’t just saying that?”
“Ryuzaki, this might not be my first kidnapping, but believe me, they never get any easier or less scary.”
“Oh.” Ryuzaki gulped audibly. “Good. I think.”
Mokuba closed his eyes. Big Brother, find us soon. Please!

A few hours had passed at the Kaiba mansion as everyone waited for Anzu to get the information they needed out of their captive, and on more than one occasion Yuugi and the others had to restrain Seto from barging in and interrupting, possibly ruining everything. "Miss Chiyoko!" The maid, Chie, rushed into the room. "The cameras just caught someone dropping a package in front of the gates to the mansion."
"What?" Seto glared at her. "Did you see anything else about them?"
"No ma'am, I'm sorry."
"Doesn't matter, everything's recorded automatically. Right now we need to check on this package before anyone else interferes." Seto marched out, Yuugi following close behind, everyone else remaining in case Anzu finally emerged.
It was a long trip to the gate, even with Seto's car, but they made it, and the package was undisturbed, a rather small one all told, nothing written on it. "What do you suppose it is, Seto?"
Seto did not respond, he merely tore the package open, then froze. He would recognize those thick black strands anywhere. There was no note, no need for a note, the warning had been made perfectly clear.
....
"Okay, I finally got her to tell me where they're keeping Mokuba." Anzu said as she emerged. Then she looked around. "Where's Yuugi and Seto?"
